Rosé Beaujolais Nouveau from Georges Duboeuf

About a month ago, on Beaujolai Nouveau Day, I posted a review of Georges Duboeuf’s 2021 Beaujolais Nouveau — the most widely distributed and available Beaujolais Nouveau in the US. Since then I’ve had an opportunity to try another Beaujolais Nouveau, a Rosé version also from Georges Duboeuf.

When I heard about a Beaujolais Nouveau Rosé, it was something new to me and I wondered how I missed it for so many years. But it turns out I wasn’t in the dark for too long, as Georges Duboeuf has only been producing it since 2018. Why they hadn’t done it before, who knows? But it was a brilliant idea! And now that I know about it, I’ll be looking forward to it in years to come.

Similar to their traditional Beaujolais Nouveau, the Rosé is made from 100% Gamay grapes from this year’s harvest and it goes through a semi-carbonic maceration before going through malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. It’s a similar process, but I assume more gentle in order to get a rosé rather than a red wine.

Also similar to the traditional Beaujolais Nouveau, this wine is meant to be consumed right away and won’t be available on the market for long. Beaujolais Nouveau Day, just before Thanksgiving, is when these wines become available and I generally consider Beaujolais Nouveau season to last through the end of year holidays — although you might still find some available slightly longer.

Tasting Notes

I found this to be a very citrus-centric rosé, and I like it! Lemon, lime, raspberry, strawberry and a hint of floral aromas make this rosé surprisingly complex. On the palate, the lemon and lime flavors dominate, but it also reveals some cranberry-like flavors. It’s nice and tart. It’s also very light. The mouthfeel is nice and the acidity is sufficient. It’s a nice rosé overall.
