Review: Domaine Bousquet, Virgen, Cabernet Sauvignon
Domaine Bousquet, in the high altitude Tupungato region of Mendoza, Argentina is known for their commitment to sustainable and organic wine production. They have also caught my attention over the past few years for being a producer with good wines at reasonable prices.
The wine I’m highlighting today is the debut vintage of their Virgen Cabernet Sauvignon, which is not only produced from organically grown grapes but is USDA certified as an organic wine, meaning no sulfites or other prohibited substances have been added to the wine during the production process. And in a world where many shoppers pass on organic foods due to the cost, this wine retails for only $13.00. Now that’s a deal!
Also unlike much of the Cabernet Sauvignon you’ll find on the market, this one is unoaked. No barrels, no staves, no chips, zero oak. All the aromas and flavors come from the fruit itself.
The aromatics are predominantly blackberry and black currant, but there’s also some earthy and vegetal elements… let’s call it, “brambly.” The flavors also skew toward blackberry and black currant, but a nice, tart version of those, not at all sweet. There’s a slight touch of tannic bitterness as well. And those tannins give the wine a nice mouthfeel. The acidity sufficiently adds brightness. The finish is fairly long with more of the berry flavors.
