Last week I wrote about a super-bargain Chinon from Lidl supermarket. This week I’m looking at another outstanding bargain from Lidl, this one a Muscadet Sèvre & Maine Sur Lie.

Muscadet Sèvre & Maine, like many European wines tells us both the region where the wine was produced and the grape used to produce the wine. As a Muscadet wine it must be made in the Loire region of France and Muscadet Sèvre & Maine is a specific sub-appellation within Muscadet. It is made from a grape called Melon de Bourgogne — be sure to add that one to your Wine Century Club list if you are able to try this wine.

The “Sur Lie” on the label indicates that the wine spent at least the full winter after production “on the lees” meaning the wine was in contact with the yeast deposits during fermentation (versus being racked off the deposits). This impacts the flavor of the wine, adding a bit if nuttiness, and can also make the mouthfeel more creamy. Per regulations of the region the wine cannot be bottled until the third week of March after harvest.

The nose is quite lovely on this wine, offering aromas such as peach, apple, orange blossom and wet stones. The palate is delicate and light, offering soft flavors of apple, peach, hazelnut and minerals. The acidity is sufficient. The mouthfeel is nice and creamy. And the finish is long with salty apple and hazelnut flavors.

If you like oysters, this wine would pair amazingly with them. Oh, and did I mention what a bargain this wine is? $6.99!!! That is a ridiculous deal for a wine this good!
