Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau Rosé
Thanksgiving is almost here and that means we’re in the peak of Beaujolais Nouveau season. The drop date for this year’s vintage (i.e., Beaujolais Nouveau Day) was just last Thursday, a week before Thanksgiving.
While the origins of Beaujolais Nouveau have nothing to do with Thanksgiving, it’s a happy coincidence that Beaujolais Nouveau wines happen to be a great choice to serve with Thanksgiving dinner.
This is also that time of year when countless wine writers are penning articles about which wines to serve on Thanksgiving. Some will recommend Pinot Noir, some will recommend Chardonnay, some will recommend Riesling and some will have other recommendations. And truthfully, the wide variety of food on the Thanksgiving table makes it impossible to pick one wine that will pair well with all those dishes. But I think Beaujolais Nouveau is a good choice. It’s fruit forward, with lively, bright flavors. It’s fairly light and approachable. And it’s inexpensive, so you don’t have to splurge on a pricey wine for relatives who might not appreciate a fine wine as much as you do.
Given the wide variety of foods served at Thanksgiving — and at Christmas, for that matter — I recommend serving a couple different types of wine. This helps cater to individual tastes, gives more pairing options and gives your guests a chance to try different wines. And guess what, Beaujolais Nouveau has another option to expand the variety at your holiday table. Enter Beaujolais Nouveau Rosé!
If it’s been a while since you’ve had a Beaujolais Nouveau, you might be surprised to hear of a rosé version. Georges Duboeuf only started producing Beaujolais Nouveau Rosé during the 2018 vintage. Unsurprisingly, it was a big hit, so they’ve continued producing it since then.
Like other Beaujolais Nouveau wines, the rosé is produced from 100% Gamay grapes. It’s just done in a rosé style, meaning they pressed the juice from the grapes and removed the grape skins before they had an opportunity to strongly influence the color and flavors in the wine.
Like the traditional red Beaujolais Nouveau, Beaujolais Nouveau Rosé is a great option for your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. It’s a citrus-centric rosé, that’s light and pairs well with foods like turkey.
Tasting Notes
The nose offers pleasant aromas reflecting ruby red grapefruit, lemon, nectarine and wet stones. It has plenty of complexity. The palate brings lemon, cranberry and nectarine flavors with enough acidity to give it brightness and freshness. The mouthfeel is nice. It finishes with a nice saline note complimenting the citrus flavors.
