Ventisquero Wine Estates, Grey, Sauvignon Blanc
This is the Sauvignon Blanc for those who prefer more elegance and less over-the-top tropical fruit. The nose is fairly lean, presenting aromas such as lime, wildflowers, jalapeño and wet stones. Although the aromatics are not highly complex, they are well balanced and beautiful. The palate is all about citrus and salinity, offering lemon and lime citrus with outstanding, bright acidity and fantastically saline minerals. Salty citrus flavors linger on a mouth watering finish.

In my last few posts, like this one, this one and this one, I’ve been highlighting Sauvignon Blanc from the coastal region of Chile. I’m continuing that theme today with a post about a Sauvignon Blanc named “Grey” from Ventisquero Wine Estates.

This wine comes from the Huasco River Valley in the northern part of the coastal region. This valley is located in the Atacama Desert, which is a desert as it’s name would imply. Water is irrigated from Huasco River in order to sustain the vines. The soils here are mostly clay and calcareous soil. The soils and the climate here result in Sauvignon Blanc that is quite distinct from those from other coastal regions in Chile. Sauvignon Blanc from this region tends to have naturally high acidity and pronounced saline mineral characteristics.

This wine would pair beautifully with oysters!
