There’s a French expression I’m quite fond of, “l’esprit d’escalier.” The literal translation of this is “the spirit of the stairs” but meaning of the expression is the experience you have as you’re walking away from a conversation and you think of the perfect response after the fact, when it’s too late. Therefore a less literal translation would be, “the wit of the stairs.”

This expression is the story of my life. Always, always, always after nearly every conversation I have I think of things I should have said but didn’t think of in the moment. This is one reason I write on this blog rather than doing a vlog or podcast. It gives me a format to think through what I want to say before I say it. Although I’m sure I still forget things and get things wrong from time to time.

Nonetheless, I made an appearance on someone else’s podcast recently. It came together a few weeks ago when I went to a happy hour get together at a local brewery. I met a guy named Anthony “Tank” Mansfield that evening and we started talking about beer and wine. You could say I got on my soapbox about what makes good beer and wine. A couple minutes into the discussion he said, “I think we should stop this conversation and save this for my podcast. I do a podcast about peoples hobbies and interests, called ‘What Ya Into?‘.” A week or two later I ended up at his house to record a podcast with him.

‘What Ya Into?’ is not a wine podcast, generally speaking, but this episode is mostly about wine. We spent a good 2+ hours talking about wine, wine regions, biodynamics, winemaking, punk rock (especially the Descendents) and other stuff. I could have gone on for another 2 hours quite easily, which might be surprising to some of those who know me and think of me as a quiet person.

And, of course, I left there feeling l’esprit d’escalier. It wouldn’t be a conversation if that didn’t happen to me. Maybe we’ll need to do it again sometime so that I can share those thoughts… or more likely, forget them again.
