Review: Corvezzo Prosecco
One of the first things you’ll notice if you see this bottle of Prosecco are the words “organic & vegan” on the label. You might find yourself wondering how a wine could not be vegan. It has to do with the fining process, which is done to clarify and stabilize wine but often uses non-vegan additives such as egg whites or casein. Fortunately for vegans, bentonite clay is a vegan option for a fining agent.
You might also notice that the label specifically says the wine is “made with organic grapes.” It does not say it’s an organic wine. This language is specific to U.S. wine labeling laws that require no use of sulfites in the production process for a wine to be called an organic wine.
More and more wines today are being made with organic grapes, and that’s a good thing. Although I think we consumers sometimes don’t appreciate the effort that goes into growing grapes organically. It’s a seven year process to transition from conventional to organic. That’s something that Corvezzo, the producer of this Prosecco, finished in 2017.
Today, Corvezzo has the largest acreage in Italy of organic Glera and Pinot Grigio grapes — although they don’t yet produce the largest volume of those grapes. They farm a total of 380 acres. That scale enables them to produce Prosecco from organic grapes at incredibly-reasonable prices. This wine is only $13 per bottle!
Organic, vegan and bargain-priced?!? That get’s my attention. But is it good? Yes, it’s delicious!
Tasting Notes
The nose is dominated by apple and pear aromas, but also offers some floral and lime scents. The palate delivers the flavors of ripe Asian pear and yellow delicious apples without the sweetness of those fruits, because this Prosecco is perfectly dry. There’s also a touch of lemon and salty minerals on the mid-palate and into the finish. It has a bright acidity, adding freshness to the flavors. The mouthfeel is nice, with a slight creaminess and a nice density to the bubbles.
