Today I’m continuing the recent series of red blends from Portugal with a wine from one of the larger producers in Alentejo, Esporão.
This is a producer that grows about 40 different varieties of grapes, but also olive groves, orchards and other produces. It sounds like a beautiful place.
This blend includes some of the Portuguese grapes we’ve seen in other blends (e.g., Aragonez (aka., Tempranillo), Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet) but also has Cabernet Sauvignon, which could be considered an international variety.
Tasting Notes
The aromas from this wine mentally transport me to a winery tasting room where the winemaker is sharing a special wine with me. In other words, it stands out as smelling amazing. It has a really pleasant blend of blackberry, strawberry, vanilla, cocoa and violet fragrances. The palate brings ripe blackberry, strawberry and cherry flavors with a plush mouthfeel. The acidity brings a vibrancy, although I’d describe this wine more as ripe and slightly jammy fruit than super vibrant. It’s more round than angular. The mid-palate evolves into a raspberry tea flavor, which carries through into the finish. Overall, this is a great wine.
