Autumn is upon us and it is therefore pinot noir season.

Why? Because that’s what I’m in the mood for. Until I’m in the mood for something else, of course. And what I’m usually in the mood for is a good bargain.

Many a wine snob will tell you there is no such thing as a good, cheap pinot noir. Au contraire, I say as I whip out a little French expression and present to you this delicious Italian pinot noir with a suggested retail price of $18.

This is not the first time I’ve reviewed a Peter Zemmer, Rolhüt, pinot noir. A couple years ago, I reviewed the 2015 vintage and it too was quite impressive. Thus I recognize consistent quality from one vintage to another, something that will result in me seeking out this wine more in the future.

Simply lovely is the first thought that comes to mind when smelling this wine. It has good complexity, yet is delicate and balanced with no aromas overpowering others. Cherry and raspberry aromas lay the foundation for the nose and elegant spices, such as allspice, nutmeg, black pepper and rose aromatics round it out. The palate is bright, delivering ripe cherry and raspberry flavors with a touch of spice. The acidity is great and the mouthfeel is nice. The finish is long and delicious. This is wonderful wine.
