Barth Riesling Sekt Sparkling Riesling

Many Americans don’t think of Germany when looking for a sparkling wine, however they produce some wonderful sparklers. They produce more than you might expect too — sekt makes up 31% of Germany’s total wine production.

This sparkler is made from riesling in the traditional méthode champenoise (meaning the carbonation is achieved by finishing the fermentation in sealed bottles, which pressurizes the wine as the fermentation produces CO2).  It is a brut (meaning it’s a dry sparkler).

I love sparkling wines and I love riesling. So when you bring the two together, I’m likely to be a fan. And that’s the case with this wine from Barth.

The nose is delightful on this wine, offering floral, apple, wet stone and a touch of yeast. The palate is also quite nice, with granny smith apple, lemon and salty mineral flavors. The mouthfeel is nice too, with a good amount of bubbliness. The acidity is perfect. It finishes with lingering salty apple flavors.
